Dengue remains an important health concern in Indonesia, including Bali. Transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, dengue can affect not only children but also teenagers and adults.
In addition to preventing mosquito bites and reducing mosquito breeding sites, vaccination can be considered as part of dengue prevention. The Qdenga dengue vaccine is now available for individuals aged 4 to 60 years, allowing more family members across different age groups to benefit from vaccination.
Qdenga is a live attenuated dengue vaccine designed to provide protection against all four dengue virus serotypes: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4.
The vaccination schedule consists of 2 doses given 3 months apart. If the first dose is administered at the age of 60, the second dose may still be given according to schedule even if the individual has turned 61 by the time the second dose is due.
Dengue vaccination is not only for children. With the expanded age range, teenagers, adults, and individuals approaching older adulthood can now consult a doctor to determine whether dengue vaccination is appropriate for them.
As with other vaccines, Qdenga may cause side effects. The most commonly reported reactions are generally mild and temporary, such as pain at the injection site, headache, muscle aches, or fatigue.
A medical assessment is recommended before vaccination to determine whether the vaccine is appropriate for each individual. Consultation is particularly important for people who are currently unwell or have a fever, are pregnant, have conditions affecting the immune system, or are receiving immunosuppressive treatment.
Dengue prevention requires a comprehensive approach. Keeping the environment clean, eliminating mosquito breeding sites, preventing mosquito bites, and considering vaccination can all play a role in reducing the risk of dengue.
